Akofa et le Dr. Oleg Maurer Akofa Hodzame was born on October 9, 1992 in the village of Agou-Kebotoé in Togo. Her heart condition was discovered because of numerous infections of her bronches, but also because of an arrear in growth since the age of four.
Akofas parents, ordinary farmers with a yearly income of 250.- CHF, have undertaken long trips frequent times from one hospital to the next trying to have their daugther treated.
When Akofa was 11 years old she was diagnosed at the university hospital of Lomé:

Auricular Septal Defect of 44mm diameter with

  • Significant short-circuit of left auricle
  • Significant dilatation of right auricle and right ventricle
  • Thereby origin of an auricular fibrillation and heart arrhythmia
  • Hyper-circulation and pulmonary-arterial hypertension.

Since treatment locally wasn’t possible, the parents were referred to a delegation of „Terre des hommes“ who accomodated the child in Massongex.
This is where our foundation took over the case.

Dr. Carlos Royo, consulting doctor for „Terre des hommes“, was able to confirm the diagnosis: Heart malformation of type Auricular Septal Defect. This malformation consists of a hole in the septum which is normally impermeable and which separates the right and the left auricles. A significant volume of the systemical blood circulation is supplied to the lung cycle whose blood circulation exceeds the systemic cycle by multiples. This overloads the right auricle and the right ventricle, which both expand, and it increases the blood circulation and the blood pressure in the lungs.

In December 2007 all necessary prelimnary examinations were conducted in the university hospital of Geneva and it was decided to close the interauricular communication as well as to repair the mitral valve. The surgery took place on January 28, 2008 under guidance of Dr. Yacine Aggoun. Everthing went very well.
After a convalescence of 14 days, Akofa was able to leave the hospital.

We want to thank all co-workers of the univeristy hospital of Geneva, espacially Dr. Yacine Aggoun for all the great co-operation. We also want to thank the foundation „Terre des hommes“ in hopes to be able to co-operate also in the future for the children’s benefit.
